FAQs

How does laser hair removal work?

Our cutting-edge technology uses light that’s absorbed by the melanin in your hair. This light is then converted into heat, which damages the hair follicles to reduce future growth. However, grey, white, blonde, or red hair may not be suitable for treatment, as these hair colors contain too little melanin to effectively absorb the light.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of laser hair removal sessions you’ll need can vary, as it depends on factors like your hair color, texture, density, and Fitzpatrick skin type. Hormonal imbalances or conditions like PCOS can also affect hair growth, but in those cases, the treatment can be especially life-changing.

The best time to treat your hair is during the anagen phase—the active growth stage—when the hair is still attached to the follicle and connected to its blood supply. This allows the laser energy to effectively target and damage the follicle. Since only a small percentage of your hair will be in the anagen phase at any one time, we need multiple sessions to catch each hair at the right stage.

For the best, most lasting results, we typically recommend at least eight sessions per treatment area.

How long before I notice a result?

You’ll start seeing a reduction in hair growth right after your first session, with continued improvement after each appointment. Most clients notice the treated hair begins to shed between 1 and 3 weeks post-treatment.

One thing to keep in mind is that between sessions 3 and 4, you may notice what seems like an increase in hair growth. Don’t worry—that’s actually a great sign!

It means we’re now targeting a new hair growth cycle, which is exactly what we want.

What are the possible side effects?

After your treatment, it’s normal for your skin to appear red, feel tingly, or have a bumpy texture, similar to the sensation of a mild sunburn. You may also notice some swelling around hair follicles. These reactions are completely normal and indicate that the treatment is working. Any irritation typically fades within a few hours, but in some cases, it may last a few days. To help your skin recover more quickly and soothe it, we apply Aloe Vera Gel after each session.

If you experience prickly heat-like symptoms, such as itchy raised bumps, we recommend using a cold compress or ice packs (avoiding direct contact with your skin) and taking antihistamine medication to reduce follicular swelling more effectively.

Although rare, some people may experience small blisters or temporary skin discoloration. This is not our goal, and we minimise the risk by patch testing before adjusting treatment settings.

Please note that we cannot treat areas covered by tattoos or moles. However, we will take extra care to cover and work around these areas safely.

Is there any downtime following laser hair removal?

There is usually minimal downtime after a laser hair removal session. However, it’s recommended to avoid activities that can cause your skin to heat up for up to 48 hours. This includes hot baths, saunas, jacuzzis, friction, or strenuous exercise. Allowing time for the heat in your skin to disperse and for any redness or swelling to subside is important for optimal recovery.

Additionally, avoid using highly perfumed or irritating skincare products during this period to prevent further skin irritation.

We recommend using a cold compress and aloe vera gel to soothe and calm your skin if needed.

Use your judgment: if your skin feels sore or irritated, it’s best to avoid tight clothing or the activities mentioned until you feel comfortable.

What does the treatment feel like?

We are proud to offer two hand-piece options for hair removal and will discuss during your consultation which will best fit your needs & treatment goals:

  1. “Moveo” Hand-Piece (Revolutionary Technology)
The “Moveo” hand-piece is virtually pain-free. Thanks to its built-in sapphire chill tip that remains in constant contact with the skin, you’ll likely feel nothing more than a gentle warming sensation. This makes the treatment much more comfortable, especially in areas with dense, dark hair. This technology is so advanced that it’s used in both NHS and private hospitals to treat patients before skin grafting surgery. To date, Liverpool’s Alder Hey Hospital has successfully treated 7,000 children with this technology.

  2. “Standard” Hand-Piece (Traditional Style)
The “standard” hand-piece is a more traditional option and can feel a bit more uncomfortable. The sensation is often described as a quick, hot flick, like an elastic band snap. This hand-piece is particularly effective for finer, lighter hair or more intricate areas. We minimize discomfort as much as possible by using contact cooling with ice packs to desensitize more sensitive treatment areas. This also helps reduce post-treatment redness and swelling.

Is laser hair removal permanant?

Laser hair removal targets and permanently damages the hair follicles, preventing future hair growth. However, some maintenance may be needed over time due to hormonal fluctuations, which can stimulate dormant follicles that haven’t produced hair before.

This doesn’t mean that all your hair will grow back. Instead, you may choose to have occasional touch-up sessions to maintain your desired level of “hair-free” skin. The need for top-ups depends on personal preference—some people go years, even decades, without feeling that the need any.

It’s recommended to have top-up sessions after pregnancy or breastfeeding due to the significant hormonal changes that occur during these stages.

What payment options are available for laser hair removal?

At Laser Loft, we offer three flexible payment options for laser hair removal:

  1. Pay as You Go – Pay for each visit individually.
  2. Discounted Treatment Packages – Save with our pre-purchased treatment packages.
  3. Elite Laser Membership – Pay monthly via direct debit while you’re receiving treatment. This option includes exclusive member perks and additional savings.

Do I need to have a consultation & patch test?

Yes, a consultation and patch test are essential and legally required. During the consultation, we review your medical history to ensure it’s safe to proceed and, importantly, assess whether you’re a suitable candidate for the treatment. The patch test helps determine the optimal settings for your sessions, ensuring the best results, and gives us an indication of how your skin will react to the full treatment.

Is there a charge for my consultation & patch test?

A £25 deposit for your consultation is taken to secure your appointment and is redeemable against your treatment. Following consultation, should you choose to not proceed or are not able eligible for the treatment, this will be fully refunded to you.

How to prep for your Laser Appointment:

Start with a clean slate! Make sure your treatment areas are squeaky clean and free from any makeup, perfume, deodorant, or creams.

01

Now that you have made the exciting decision to start laser hair removal, your only approved hair removal methods in between appointments are shaving and trimming. We need the hairs to stay in the follicles or the laser cannot be absorbed or cause the damage that is needed to stop hair growth. (Waxing, epilating, hair removal creams and bleaching are all banned.)

02

Get prepped – Shave your treatment areas the day before so that the hair is no longer than 1mm. This will allow for a more comfortable and effective treatment. If you are having intimate laser, leave any hair that you want to keep unshaved so that we can keep the style that you like!

03

We cannot treat you if you are wearing fake tan, it needs to be completely removed ahead of your appointment due to a high risk of burning and hypo-pigmentation.  Although we can safely treat tanned skin with the pain-free, moveo hand-piece, having a real tan may slow your treatment results and you may require more sessions overall. If you do catch a sun tan, please speak to us ahead of your appointment ideally so that we can advise the best course of action.

Having laser can cause your skin to be more photo-sensitive than usual for up to a month after treatment. It is crucial to practise sun-safety and look after your skin by wearing a high factor of at least SPF 30 on exposed treatment areas, keep reapplying it and keep treatment areas covered in loose clothing if possible. If you are going away on holiday, please speak to us so we can factor this in to your session scheduling.

04

We reserve the right to charge for any appointment that has to be abandoned due to active sun-tan or fake tan.

05

We’ll chat about your health journey during your consultation, but please remember to keep us in the loop about any changes to your health. Whether it’s new medications, even from the chemist or a herbal remedy, we need to know so that we can ensure that laser is still safe for you

Test patches are carried out at least 7 days prior to your first session to determine optimum settings and to judge how your skin might react to a full treatment. A test patch is a small trial in your treatment area and allows the practitioner to assess how well the light energy is being absorbed and whether the skin is responding as would be expected.

Please make a note of any redness or swelling and how long it takes to reduce following a test patch, also whether or not the skin blisters or feels excessively hot and for how long.

06

Be sure to arrive in plenty of time for your appointment. This way, we can carry out the best quality treatment for you, whilst keeping you as comfortable as possible.
