Acne treatment for face & body
At Laser Loft, based in Hartley Wintney, North Hampshire, we provide targeted acne treatments designed to leave your skin clear and blemish-free. Using Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), either on its own or alongside other advanced clinical treatments, we can significantly reduce the number and severity of active breakouts. IPL helps to calm inflammation, minimise lesions, and decrease the frequency of future breakouts for smoother, healthier skin. This treatment can be carried out on the face, chest, back and shoulders.
How it works:
- Eliminates P. Acnes bacteria
- Causes shrinkage of overactive sebaceous glands
- Reduction in sebum production
- Tightens pores and stimulates collagen production
- Improves discolouration caused by inflammation and dark spots
- Slightly improves acne scarring
What causes Acne?
1. Hormones
- Acne typically begins during puberty when the body starts producing androgens, hormones that cause the sebaceous glands to enlarge. While this is a natural part of development, for acne sufferers, these glands become overactive. Androgens also contribute to acne flare-ups during the menstrual cycle and, in some cases, pregnancy.
2. Oily Skin
- Androgens stimulate the sebaceous glands to produce excess sebum (oil), which mixes with dead skin cells and bacteria. Though this is a normal process, an overproduction of sebum can clog the pores and lead to acne. Stress can also exacerbate sebum production, worsening acne symptoms.
3. Bacteria
- The bacterium Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) is naturally found on the skin and helps regulate sebum levels. However, when a follicle becomes clogged, P. acnes multiplies rapidly, leading to inflammation in the surrounding skin, contributing to acne.
4. Inflammation
- When your body detects unwanted bacteria, your immune system sends white blood cells to fight the infection, which can result in red, swollen, and painful pimples. Inflammation varies from person to person, but studies show it tends to be more pronounced in adult women. Fortunately, there are numerous treatment options available. Since acne is unique to each individual, treatment responses can differ. Often, a combination of therapies is most effective, and our team can guide you in choosing the best solution for your skin.

FAQs
How does Intense Pulsed Light work for acne?
The Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) system targets overactive sebaceous glands, effectively reducing the number and severity of active lesions while calming inflammation and minimizing breakouts. The light also encourages the production of new collagen, improving overall skin texture. Additionally, IPL can help diminish the appearance of red or brown marks often left behind by acne, promoting a clearer, more even complexion.
How does the treatment feel?
Treatment is mildly uncomfortable but no anaesthesia is required. Many people describe the sensation as similar to the flick of an elastic band.
What should I expect after the treatment?
Following treatment, the skin may appear slightly red, and you may experience a warm tingling sensation. To help soothe any discomfort, the skin is typically cooled, and a specialist post procedure serum is applied to soothe and aid the skins recovery.
How many sessions will I need?
Are there any side effects?
It’s common for the treated area to appear red right after the treatment, but this typically fades within a few hours. Most clients experience no further side effects. In rare cases, a small blister may form, or the skin may temporarily become lighter or darker.
